BMW M2 Cup junior drivers in action at the Norisring season finale

The BMW M2 Cup has all the ingredients for a spectacular season finale in Nuremberg, including a close battle for the title, a healthy field of success-hungry young drivers and some famous faces from the history of BMW M Motorsport.

Gerhard Berger will be keeping a close eye on the BMW M2 Cup field when the lights turn green for the final time this season. The former Formula 1 driver and current DTM boss has followed the season closely so far.

“The BMW M2 Cup is the ideal one-make trophy – as the 36,000 fans for the race in Assen clearly show”, says Berger. “The series offers young drivers a genuine level playing field. We are proud that the series is part of the DTM platform.”

Berger is just one of many racing legends who will be at the Norisring weekend. Guests in Nuremberg include a number of famous names from BMW’s motorsport history, such as Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Jonny Cecotto, Markus Flasch, Timo Glock, Bruno Spengler, Peter Oberndorfer and Norbert Knerr, Head of Classic Brand Management at BMW.

The circuit is certain to add that little bit of spice to the final round of the season, too, as series manager Jörg Michaelis explains: “We are racing at the Norisring, which is something very special to all of us. The majority of our drivers are between 16 and 18 years old. It is especially important for them to gain a lot of experience. Our drivers were able to show off their talents on a variety of circuits this year. Now we have a street circuit to finish the season on a high.”

In the fight for the podium places, these success-hungry juniors like Colin Caresani, Salman Owega, Maxime Oosten, Theo Oeverhaus, Rodrigo Almeida and Vincent France play a big role. For them, it’s a chance to end the inaugural season of the one-make trophy with a win.

The title showdown between Louis Henkefend and Fabian Kreim takes on a whole new meaning. The Norisring is considered to be BMW M’s home circuit and has always attracted countless fans of the brand from Bavaria. The season finale comprises two BMW M2 Cup races, on Saturday (11:15) and on Sunday (11:10).

The fight for the title:

Louis Henkefend leads the championship with 163 points, followed by Fabian Kreim with 138 points. A total of 45 points are still up for grabs in Nuremberg, meaning that Davit Kajaia (in third with 120 points) still has a mathematical chance of title glory.
