Excitement building as fans return

In just a couple of weeks the BMW M2 Cup will be celebrating its inaugural race weekend. The single-make trophy will make its series debut as part of the DTM at the Lausitzring from 23 to 25 July. And the best thing is: for the first time fans will be able to return to the race track! Drivers have been preparing for the new season at the final test at Papenburg.

“Our inaugural race weekend is fast approaching,” said series manager Jörg Michaelis. “There is still plenty to organise, but we are very happy that things are about to get going. Having fans at the Lausitzring will be a real added bonus.”

The DTM race weekend at the Lausitzring will see fans trackside for the first time in 2021. Up to 10,000 spectators will be permitted at the circuit on Saturday and on Sunday to cheer on the BMW M2 Cup drivers.

Papenburg was the venue for the final pre-season test in 2021. BMW M2 CS Racing cars in ccs fabric frame and Hazet liveries made their on-track debuts at the track in Lower Saxony and joined an elite group of other liveries including Schaeffler, RoboMarkets, Shell, CATL, Endless and randstad.

“It’s extremely important that the young drivers get a handle on their new machinery,” explains Christian Göbel, assistant project manager. “Every kilometre under their belt is important. Another factor is the relationship between driver, team and car – all of our young talents are learning about this right from day one.”

The original plan was for the season to start at Norisring in early July. The two races are to be replaced on the BMW M2 Cup calendar by the Zolder race weekend (6 to 8 August).
